HDPE - Laser Cutting

High Density Polyethylene

Of all the materials we laser cut, HDPE is the plastic we process the most. HDPE is the abbreviation for High Density Poly Ethylene. Around 25% to 35% of the use of our machines is for laser cutting HDPE. PMMA and POM lag far behind. That is not really strange because HDPE is one of the most commonly used plastics worldwide! In addition to the fact that HDPE is widely used, it is very suitable for laser cutting. HDPE laser cutting offers various advantages compared to milling, which is why we expect most of the HDPE sheet material to be processed using laser cutting within 5 years.

Advantages of HDPE

HDPE is fully food safe, moisture-repellent, very strong and resistant to chemicals. The black version is UV-resistant due to the addition of soot and is therefore suitable for outdoor use. Thanks to these properties in combination with the price, HDPE is one of the most commonly used plastics in the industry. Do you need help or advice for your specific situation? Email us!

Properties of HDPE

- Highly impact-resistant and dimensionally stable
- Temperature range up to 80°C
- Has a moisture absorption of 0.5%
- Has a coefficient of friction of 0.25
- Good price-to-quality ratio

Why HDPE laser cutting?

The reason that HDPE is a widely used plastic is mainly due to the excellent price-to-performance ratio. HDPE, together with PVC and PP, is by far the most commonly used plastic in the manufacturing industry. The material is very suitable for laser cutting, so that we can cut up to approx. 12mm-thick HDPE. Laser cutting offers various advantages compared to milling; one of the big advantages is the reduction in cost. This can amount to an advantage of 60% compared to HDPE milling. We therefore expect most of the HDPE sheet material to be processed using laser cutting within 5 years.
