POM - Laser Cutting

Polyoxymethylene

More and more often, the decision is taken not to mill plastic semi-finished products but to have us laser cut the semi-finished products. There is an ongoing shift from milling POM to laser cutting POM parts - and that is not without reason. The reason is simple. POM can be processed, for example, even more accurately and faster by means of laser cutting. The result of a faster production time is lower costs. Despite the higher production speed, the accuracy is excellent. With laser cutting, a concentrated, high-power "light beam” shines on the material. The material exposed to the laser evaporates very rapidly. The sheet material is on the machine during laser cutting, but the material is not touched by, for example, a milling cutter. Laser cutting is therefore contactless.

Advantages of POM

POM has a low moisture absorption and, due to its excellent mechanical properties, products remain dimensionally stable. POM also does not oxidize. Oil is unnecessary and ball bearings are not needed to maintain smooth movement. POM is therefore a suitable substitute for metal. Are you looking for a replacement for a metal part? Contact us!

Properties of POM

- Impact-resistant and dimensionally stable
- Heat resistant up to 100°C
- Tensile strength of 70 N/mm
- Moisture absorption of 0.2%
- Mechanical impact strength of 8  Charpy
- Electrical resistance of 10 16 Ω cm
- Coefficient of friction of 0.36

Also known as Delrin

Perhaps you know POM under the trade name "Delrin”. This name is widely used in the industry. Because of its hardness, POM is often used in/for industrial applications. It is often used as an alternative to steel and is very suitable for plastic semi-finished products that must comply with strict tolerances. For many sectors, we laser cut POM with a thickness of <1 mm up to approx. 12 mm.
